Planned Topic
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Understanding Insurance โ€” What You Need and What You Don't

Insurance can be one of the most confusing โ€” and expensive โ€” parts of managing your finances in retirement. Many residents are paying for cover they no longer need, while others may have gaps they are not aware of.

This session will cover the main types of insurance relevant to retirement village residents โ€” home and contents, health insurance, car insurance and travel insurance โ€” and what questions to ask your insurer to make sure you are getting value for money. We will also look at what insurance Aveo holds for the village and what that means for your own cover needs.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Your Superannuation in Retirement โ€” Making It Work for You

For many Australians, superannuation is one of their largest assets โ€” yet it is also one of the least understood. Once you have retired, the decisions you make about how and when to draw on your super can have a significant impact on your long-term financial wellbeing.

This session will explain how superannuation works in retirement โ€” the difference between accumulation and pension phase, minimum drawdown rates, how super interacts with the Age Pension, and what happens to your super when you pass away. We will also cover how to keep track of any lost super and what to do if you are unsure about your current fund.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ End of Life Wishes โ€” Planning Ahead with Confidence

Talking about end of life is never easy โ€” but planning ahead is one of the most loving and practical things you can do for your family. Without clear instructions, the people you love may be left to make difficult decisions at an already distressing time, sometimes without knowing what you would have wanted.

This session will walk through the practical steps involved in documenting your end of life wishes โ€” from funeral preferences and organ donation to what to include in a personal statement for your family. We will also touch on how end of life wishes interact with your Will and Advanced Health Directive, and where to store these documents so they can be found when needed.

โš–๏ธ Appointing a Power of Attorney or Guardian

A Power of Attorney (POA) is a legal document that authorises someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf โ€” about your finances, property and, in some cases, your personal care โ€” if you are no longer able to do so yourself. Without one in place, your family may face a lengthy and costly legal process to gain authority to act for you.

This session will explain the different types of Power of Attorney available in Queensland โ€” General, Enduring and Enduring (for personal/health matters) โ€” and the difference between a Power of Attorney and a Guardian. We will cover who can be appointed, what powers they can and cannot be given, and how to put these documents in place without necessarily needing a solicitor.

๐Ÿ“ Preparing or Updating Your Will

A Will is the cornerstone of any estate plan โ€” yet an estimated half of all Australians do not have one, and many of those who do have a Will that is out of date. Moving into a retirement village, changes in family circumstances, or the acquisition of new assets are all reasons to review your Will.

This session will cover what a valid Will must contain under Queensland law, the role of an executor and how to choose one wisely, what happens if you die without a Will (intestate), and how superannuation and jointly-held assets interact with your estate. We will also look at low-cost options for having a Will prepared or updated, including community legal services available to seniors.

๐Ÿฅ Advanced Health Directives โ€” Your Medical Wishes in Writing

An Advanced Health Directive (AHD) is a legal document that sets out your wishes about medical treatment in advance โ€” so that if you are ever in a situation where you cannot speak for yourself, your doctors and family know exactly what you would and would not want. It is one of the most important documents a person can have, yet it is also one of the least commonly completed.

This session will explain what an Advanced Health Directive is and how it differs from a general Power of Attorney for personal matters. We will walk through the Queensland AHD form, explain what each section means in plain language, discuss resuscitation preferences and other common decisions, and explain how to register the document so it is accessible to medical staff in an emergency. Blank AHD forms will be available on the day.
